Universities should focus on growth of their cities
BusinessLIVE features an article by Owen Skae, the director of Rhodes Business School in which he highlights an international trend of how universities located in small cities are playing a role in the growth of their cities. This trend is relevant to George as a well-run city, commercial capital of the Garden Route and educational centre. Skae makes reference to other articles where it is has been found that Americans are leaving big cities for smaller places with populations of between 500,000 and a million because they offer academic and cultural stimulation and are centres of creative thinking and innovation. In Britain this trend is also emerging where roleplayers recognize that collaborative approaches can lead to partnership funding and local economic growth. Engagement is needed with local schools, colleges and universities. George has many of the ingredients to become an educational centre. Invest Garden Route is keen to discuss this concept further with interested parties.
