Op-Ed: Tourism can re-ignite the South African economy
Daily Maverick features an article by Michael Spicer and Paul Bannister in which they discuss how tourism can re-ignite the South African economy. Wesgro, the Western Cape Provincial Government and City of Cape Town agency promoting inter alia tourism have secured Austrian Airlines to introduce a direct flight to Cape Town. It is estimated that a regular long-distance flight adds 3000 jobs. In recent years, Greece has managed to revive its economy through tourism with significant job creation that has especially benefitted young people. The article recommends collaboration to ensure that an attractive offering is made available to tourists. Tourists who have enjoyable and memorable holidays later often become investors. It is not only the foreign tourist but also the domestic tourist that needs to be attracted. The Garden Route region needs to work together to ensure that it gains spin-offs from the Cape Town gateway while also developing George Airport as a bridgehead to attract more flights per week. Another one flight per day will add 60000 seats per year. Let us start talking about this exciting prospect!
