This article by Alexander Forbes economists advocates a two-tier city approach that recognises the importance to grow the regional cities, something I believe is crucial to grow the economy. While the four Tier-1 cities account for a large slice of economic activity, the identified secondary cities can and should be playing important roles to grow those leadign economic sectors within their regions. The article seems to exclude the Western Cape in the analysis and thereby George as a regional centre or secondary city. Clearly, George will form the hub for the Garden Route as a region and include Mossel Bay, Knysna and Oudtshoorn in the immediate 60km radius.
